Remake Patek Philippe PP Calatrava 5227G-010 Classic Style: Is It Worth the Price?

Today, I tried to remake a Patek Philippe watch. It’s the Calatrava 5227G-010 model. I’ve always loved the classic look of this watch, and I figured, why not try to make one myself? So, I got to work.

First, I looked up everything I could find about this watch. I saw that it’s a pretty popular model and that many people think it’s a good investment, just like the Nautilus and Aquanaut. From what I gathered, the waiting list for a real one can be up to a year, some even said 8 years for the Nautilus model! That’s crazy.

I found some information about the watch’s features. It’s a 39mm dress watch with an “Officer’s Style” caseback and a gold rotor. It looked elegant. It also shows the date, which is always useful.

Finding the Parts

Next, I started looking for parts. I found some listings that said a real one would cost around $28,190. That’s way out of my budget, but it gave me an idea of what I was up against.

  • Case: I found a similar-looking 39mm case online. It wasn’t the exact same, but it had that classic round shape I liked.
  • Movement: This was tricky. I couldn’t get my hands on a real PP 324 SC movement, so I settled for a decent automatic movement I found.
  • Dial: I found a simple white dial that matched the Calatrava’s style. I managed to print a “Patek Philippe” logo, it’s not very clear though, but it’s there.
  • Hands: I found some gold-colored hands that looked pretty close to the original.
  • Strap: I had an old black leather strap lying around, which seemed to fit the watch’s style.

Putting It Together

Putting it all together was a real challenge. I started by fitting the movement into the case. It wasn’t a perfect fit, but I managed to secure it. Then, I attached the dial and hands. This was fiddly work, but I got there in the end.

The strap was easy to attach, and with that, my homemade Calatrava was complete! It’s not perfect, of course. It doesn’t have the same weight or feel as the real thing, and the movement isn’t as smooth. But, it looks pretty good, if I do say so myself.

The End Result

It’s nowhere near a real Patek Philippe, but it’s my own take on it. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. It was a fun project, and I learned a lot about watches in the process. I wore it around the house today, and it felt pretty good on my wrist. It’s not something I’d wear out, but it’s a nice little project that I’m proud of.

Maybe one day I’ll get my hands on a real Patek Philippe, but for now, my homemade version will do just fine. It’s a reminder that sometimes, it’s fun to just try and make something yourself, even if it’s not perfect.
