Well, looky here, this fancy thing called a “smart-watch,” apple somethin’ somethin’. My grandson, he’s always fiddlin’ with these gizmos. Says this one’s a watch, but it does all sorts of things. He showed me, taps it with his finger and it lights up like a firefly jar.
Now, they call it “aluminum case,” like a fancy tin can, I reckon. And “starlight?” Must be a shiny color, like them twinkly stars you see way out in the country on a clear night. They say it’s got a “sport band.” Probably just means it’s rubbery, like them bands they put on chickens’ legs, so you know whose is whose.
This watch, it’s 40mm. Don’t know what that means, but my grandson says it’s the size, like how big a melon is. Sounds small, like a little button mushroom, but he says it shows all sorts of stuff on the screen. He was tappin’ and swipin’, and I saw numbers and pictures. Said it can tell you the time, sure, but also how many steps you take and if your heart’s thumpin’ right.
- Time? I got a clock on the wall, big as a dinner plate, easy to see.
- Steps? I walk all day, weedin’ the garden, feedin’ the chickens, ain’t got time to count steps.
- Heart thumpin’? I can feel that myself, thank you very much.
He says it connects to his phone, too. Another one of them fancy gadgets. Sends messages and makes calls. Well, I got a phone in the kitchen, hangs on the wall. Big buttons, easy to dial. Don’t need no watch talkin’ to my phone.
This “starlight aluminum” watch, it’s supposed to be strong. Don’t scratch easy, he says. That’s good, I guess. Things get bumped around here, what with all the chores and such. And the band, he says it’s comfortable. Don’t want no scratchy thing on your wrist all day.
He showed me pictures on his phone, said you can change the watch face, make it look different. Flowers, animals, even pictures of yourself! Seems silly to me, a watch is a watch. But these young folks, they like all them bells and whistles.
He was tellin’ me about all the things it does, like trackin’ your sleep and playin’ music. Sleep? I sleep when I’m tired, wake up when the rooster crows. Music? I got my radio in the kitchen, plays them old country tunes I like.
This smart-watch thing, it’s all modern and fancy. Probably costs a pretty penny, too. For somethin’ that just tells the time and a whole lot more I don’t need. But I guess if you like all them gadgets, it’s alright. Keeps my grandson busy, anyway. Better than him gettin’ into mischief.
So, there you have it. That fancy “smart-watch” thing. Sounds complicated to me, but the young folks love it. Maybe it’s the way of the future, I don’t know. I’ll stick to my old wall clock and radio, thank you kindly.
